Denton Dene and Beyond: Romans, coalmining and ancient woodland

This Heritage Walk explores the rich and fascinating history of Denton Dene and the surrounding area. You will explore the area’s Roman and coalmining heritage as well as visiting one of Newcastle’s few remaining denes with its ancient woodland.
You will explore the area’s Roman and coalmining heritage as well as visiting one of Newcastle’s few remaining denes with its ancient woodland. The walk is being led by local historian, Judith Green and kindly supported by the St James’ Heritage and Environment Group.
The walk will start at 1030am on Saturday 17 September. Attendees should dress appropriately for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for navigating the Dene on this walk.

Denton Dene has some slopes due to the geography of the Dene so visitors should be prepared for that. This walk is steep in places and also includes walking beyond the boundary of Denton Dene itself and along the Hadrian’s Way National Cycle Path
