Winter Trail - Chirrups to cheer us up
from Monday 14 December

The robin is a symbol of hope and good luck - they bring flashes of colour to the winter and chirrups and song to cold days. Our friendly Robins have been busy flitting around the city and have settled in 10 of our parks - can you seek them out? Walk along the paths to see how many you can find.

You can find our special robins in:

Denton Dene South
Harbottle Park
Iris Brickfield
Jesmond Dene
Kingston Park West
North Kenton Park
Nuns Moor Park
Paddy Freeman's Park
Tyne Riverside Country Park
Walker Riverside Park

In each park there is one particularly helpful Robin who has found a special key - can you imagine what it may unlock?

This year's winter trail has been created by visual artist Bethan Maddocks. Bethan is from County Durham, and now based in the Ouseburn in Newcastle upon Tyne. She works with communities and organisations, facilitating conversations and collecting stories that she turns into artwork that is socially engaged and specific to a site or place. Bethan's artwork has been installed in our parks by artist Dan McConway.

Competition Time!

Let us know what you think the key would open on Facebook and Twitter by tagging @urbangreenncl and using the hashtag #TheRobinsKey

We'll be sharing some of your entries on our own pages and asking Bethan, the artist behind the trail, to choose her favourite suggestions to win some goodies!

Get creative with nature this festive season!

We have created some FREE downloadable activity sheets to help you have extra fun in our parks and allotments this festive season.

Go for a winter adventure in one of our 33 parks and look out for some fallen twigs and sticks. Collect some and take them home, and see if you can create a seasonal decoration for your tree or home. You could make one as a gift for a friend, relative or someone who has been kind to you this year and put a smile on their face.

Did you know that many of our parks have pine trees in them? At this time of year, you can often find fallen pine cones nearby. Go out and see if you can find one. These can be made into all sorts of wonderful decorations and ornaments. We've created a woodland friend with ours. Why not download our activity sheet to see how?
