Work is about to get underway to repair and maintain our play parks across our estate.
When Urban Green Newcastle took over management of our parks the play areas were in a varied state of repair with many requiring updates and replacements. So, at the end of last year, we undertook a city-wide tender and procurement exercise and have now appointed Pennine Playgrounds Ltd to complete the first phase of repairs across our parks.
This programme of work will begin next week (8 March 2021) and is expected to take until early May – and will see us invest £200k to complete 160 individual repair tasks across all of our play areas.
This first phase of repairs is focused on bringing our existing play parks up to a good standard with works ranging from topping-up safety bark, inspecting or servicing equipment & infrastructure, repair of damaged parts, removal of a feature at the end of its serviceable life, through to the replacement of equipment.
We will also be including the replacement of the damaged equipment in Heaton Park as part of this phase of work, and will be sharing more details on the new plans for that park soon.
Looking ahead, we are aware that a number of our parks require larger scale works and updates. We want to collaborate with our park users to co-create play parks that are open and accessible to all, so before we do any major works we want to speak to our park users to find out what they want from their play parks. We will soon be launching Urban Green Park Action, a public consultation scheme to help us to get input from the people of Newcastle, and play parks will be a key part of these discussions.
