This steep wooded dene is a popular place for walking and getting away from the bustle of city life.


Nature enthusiasts and walkers enjoy exploring the network of paths through the ancient woodland of Denton Dene South, to the west of Newcastle city centre. The ponds are home to a population of smooth and palmate newts and there is an abundance of birds and wildlife that can be seen.

The geography of Denton Dene South means the paths can be steep in places so is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The paths can be muddy, so a good pair of outdoor shoes / boots is recommended.

You won't find a café in Denton Dene South so make sure you pack a rucksack with essential supplies
