A thriving country park on the banks of the River Tyne. Popular for outdoor activities and getting back to nature. 

Description

Situated on the North bank of the Tyne, close to Newburn, Tyne Riverside Country Park is formed from reclaimed industrial land, previously occupied by Isabella Colliery.

A popular country park for outdoor recreation and sports – great for walking , cycling and horse riding with a large network for footpaths and public rights of way including Hadrian’s Way, which links up with Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and the Wylam Waggonway.

The slipway provides boat access to the River Tyne and is used by Tynemouth Sailing Club, Newburn Water Ski Club and Newburn Leisure Centre for canoeing.

The large play area with swings, slides and climbing units is popular with families.

Did you know?

The Battle of Newburn Ford took place here in 1640 between England and Scotland. The Scots went on to occupy Newcastle just two days later.

Getting Here

There are plenty of free car-parking spaces within the park.

The nearest bus stop is on Newburn High Street.

Access

Access for wheelchair users or pushchairs is quite good. Much of the park is flat and the paths surfaced. The Battlefield area was designed with easy access in mind, with a flat tarmac path for walkers only.

Things to do for grown ups

Outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. There are miles and miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore and great off-road cycling.

Food and Drink

Hedley’s Riverside Café is a superb dog-friendly coffee shop located in the park. It’s open daily and serves all-day breakfasts, home-made scones, soups, snacks and hot drinks. The Keelmans Lodge is at the entrance to the park and also serves up great food and has its own brewery on site. 

Toilets

There are public toilets available at Hedley’s Riverside Café, which are managed by the café during their opening times.
